Which law applies to your marriage
The right route depends on the religion of both partners. Choosing correctly at the start saves time and avoids rejected applications.
- Special Marriage Act, 1954: for any two people, including inter-religion couples and marriages with foreign nationals. Requires a 30-day public notice.
- Hindu Marriage Act, 1955: when both partners are Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist. The marriage is solemnised by ceremony and then registered.
- Anand Marriage Act, 1909: Sikh couples married by Anand Karaj can register their marriage under this Act.
- Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012: requires marriages in Punjab to be registered.
Court marriage process, step by step

Documents required for court marriage
- Age proof of both partners: birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or passport
- Address proof: Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport or driving licence
- Passport-size photographs of both partners
- Affidavits stating date of birth, marital status and nationality
- Divorce decree or death certificate of the former spouse, if previously married
- Witnesses with ID and address proof (two or three, depending on the Act)

The groom must be at least 21 years old and the bride at least 18.
