Most delays in court marriage happen because of a missing or mismatched document. Use this checklist before you go to the Marriage Officer or Registrar.
Documents for both partners
- Age proof: birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or passport
- Address proof: Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport or driving licence
- Photographs: recent passport-size photographs, and wedding photographs where the marriage was performed by ceremony
- Affidavits: stating date of birth, marital status and nationality
If either partner was married before
- Divorce decree, if divorced
- Death certificate of the former spouse, if widowed
Witnesses
Witnesses need ID and address proof. The Special Marriage Act requires three witnesses; registration under other Acts commonly needs two. Check with your advocate for your case.
Extra documents for NRIs and foreign nationals
- Valid passport and visa
- Single-status or no-objection certificate from the embassy, attested where required
Common mistakes to avoid
- Spelling of names or date of birth differing between documents
- Expired ID documents
- Address proof that does not match the district where the application is filed
We check every document in advance so nothing holds up your marriage. Read more on our court marriage page.
